How to Help Others
The Dalai Lama once said ‘Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if we can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them’. Doing good for others makes us feel good about ourselves and has a positive impact on everyone involved. We all need a helping hand at one point or another in our lives, so how can we help others? Here are 10 ways you can help someone:
1.Stop and listen
A lot of the time, most people just want to talk about what is going on in their lives. Lend an ear for a friend who needs some comforting words and someone to listen.
2.Pay someone a visit
We sometimes get so absorbed in our lives and our immediate circle that we forget those who have no one. Pay someone a visit, the elderly or someone who is feeling lonely.
It takes less than a second to do but can make a world of difference to others. Just smile. Smiling is contagious and can make those around you feel happier. Show those pearly whites and spread some joy.
Send someone a text wishing them a good day. Positive messages can help someone have a better day, it’s also very quick to do.
Volunteering your time is a great organised way to help others. You can volunteer your time at places that you enjoy or helping a cause that you are passionate about.
Some people just need a nudge or motivation. You can use your voice and your knowledge to help others. You can give assembly talks at schools or hold a talk at a church.
There are many ways to donate. You don’t necessarily have to donate money, you can also donate time, food and clothing. Next time you clear out your wardrobe, why not donate the clothes and shoes to your local charity shop or clothes banks?
If you are unsure of which career path you want to take, you may consider one that helps people. Careers such as teaching, becoming a doctor or a career in philanthropy can help others as well as yourself.
Who doesn’t love a surprise? You can surprise someone with a bunch of flowers, or an unexpected lunch. Reminding your family and friends of how much you love and appreciate them may make someone’s day.
Most of all, vow to help those in need. We encounter at least one person we can help each day. It doesn’t have to be a big gesture; a simple smile can make a huge impact.
